Today was my first day at my new job in New Orleans at a busy French Quarter upscale restaurant as a waitress. It was just orientation. I was expecting so much more today.
Instead I watched promotional videos, filled out paperwork and had an almost ($1.00) free meal.
I thought they would be nazis and have me memorize the wine list and/or the menu today. Apprently that will come in due time. In the next two days, Tues. and Weds. I have double shifts. Woo...I don't think my feet are going to be happy with that. Especially since I'll be working upstairs and down!
I'm a bit apprehensive however because there is a 3 person system here. An A waiter, a B waiter and a food runner/back waiter. I mean, sheeesh!
This whole waitressing thing is a lot harder then it ever looked like sitting down. Strangely I was thought there were more waitresses than waiters out there. Perhaps the world of fine dining is different. Now that I think of it, in the more upscale restaurants I've always been served by a male waiter.
Out of the 30 or so wait staff members 4 are women plus me, the newbie, who has never served anyone !!! There was even a guy there that was telling me about all his different wait staff jobs that he has had. He asked me where I was a hostess before..and I told him I'd never been a server before. Automatically he asks, "Do you know someone, is that how they hired you?"
Geez. I only applied with hope. That was it. I guess I got lucky. ;) After a really shitty and I do mean SHITTY semester at school....making bank on tips will at least make me summer better.
